What Is a VPN? A Beginner's Guide

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server operated by the VPN provider. All your internet traffic is routed through this tunnel, hiding your IP address and encrypting your data from anyone who might be watching — your ISP, the coffee shop Wi-Fi operator, or a hacker on the same network.

How a VPN Works

When you connect to a VPN:

1. Your device establishes a secure connection to the VPN server using an encrypted protocol like WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2.
2. Your real IP address is replaced with the VPN server’s IP address, making it appear as though you’re browsing from the server’s location.
3. All data is encrypted before leaving your device and decrypted at the VPN server, preventing anyone on your network from reading your traffic.
4. The VPN server forwards your request to the website or service you’re accessing, then routes the response back through the encrypted tunnel.

Why Use a VPN?

• Privacy — Your ISP cannot see which websites you visit or what you download.
• Security — Your data is encrypted on public Wi-Fi networks.
• Geo-unblocking — Access content that’s restricted in your region (requires a VPN that supports streaming).
• Avoid throttling — ISPs sometimes slow down specific types of traffic; encryption prevents them from identifying traffic types.

What a VPN Does NOT Do

A VPN is not a complete privacy solution. It won’t prevent websites from tracking you via cookies, browser fingerprinting, or logged-in accounts. It won’t make you anonymous — your VPN provider can still see your traffic if they log it. It won’t protect you from malware or phishing attacks.
