How We Test VPNs
Transparent, consistent, and reproducible — our testing methodology ensures every VPN review is fair, accurate, and useful.
Testing Environment
All VPN tests are conducted from multiple geographic locations using standardized hardware and connection types. Our primary test bench uses a 1 Gbps fiber connection in North America, supplemented by 100 Mbps connections in Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. Tests run on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android to ensure cross-platform accuracy.
- Clean test environment with no other VPN software installed
- Baseline speed measured before each test session
- Multiple server locations tested per provider
- Tests performed at different times of day to account for network congestion
Speed Testing
Speed tests measure download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) for each VPN connection. We use a custom script that runs multiple speed tests via Speedtest.net's CLI tool and averages the results. Each provider is tested across at least three different server locations, with five runs per location.
- Download speed reduction percentage compared to baseline
- Upload speed impact for streaming and torrenting
- Latency increase for real-time applications like gaming and video calls
- Connection stability and consistency across multiple tests
Privacy & Security Testing
Privacy and security are verified through multiple independent tests. We check for DNS leaks, IPv6 leaks, WebRTC leaks, and verify that the kill switch functions correctly under various failure scenarios. Logging policies are evaluated against the provider's published privacy policy and independent audit reports.
- DNS leak testing across multiple server connections
- IPv6 and WebRTC leak detection
- Kill switch verification through simulated connection drops
- Encryption protocol verification (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2)
- Review of independent audit reports and warrant canaries
Streaming & Torrenting
Streaming support is verified by testing each VPN's ability to access major streaming platforms including Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. We test across multiple server locations and report which libraries are accessible. Torrenting support is evaluated based on P2P server availability, download speeds, and port forwarding support.
Scoring System
Each VPN is scored on eight dimensions: Privacy, Security, Performance, Streaming, Torrenting, Ease of Use, Value, and an Overall score. Every sub-score uses a 0-10 scale derived from quantitative test data. The Overall score is a weighted average designed to reflect real-world usage patterns rather than lab conditions.
Updates & Re-testing
VPN services change over time — servers are added, features are removed, and privacy policies are updated. We re-test providers at least every six months or whenever significant changes are announced. Each review includes the date of the most recent test, and scores are adjusted as new data becomes available. Readers are encouraged to check the test date and look for updated reviews when making purchasing decisions.
