Rankings
ExpressVPN
Lightway protocol delivered 920 Mbps — the fastest we've recorded. Near-zero speed loss on nearby servers.
NordVPN
NordLynx averaged 890 Mbps with excellent consistency. Slightly slower than ExpressVPN but more consistent across regions.
Mullvad
850 Mbps average speeds. Fewer users per server means less congestion during peak hours.
Surfshark
620 Mbps — fast enough for 4K streaming but trails category leaders. Performance varies by server location.
Proton VPN
480 Mbps — adequate for most uses but noticeably slower than competitors. Paid plans don't outperform free alternatives.
Testing Methodology
All speed tests were conducted from a 1 Gbps fiber connection in Dallas, Texas. We tested each VPN’s WireGuard (or equivalent modern protocol) implementation, connecting to the nearest available server. Each result represents the average of five tests taken at different times of day.
